Article from the week of February 10, 2026
For Valentine's day this year, the writers of What’s Spinning decided to interview some couples about their shared music tastes as well as what they listen to separately.
Greta and Roxanna
A favorite song that reminds them of each other is “Somewhere Beyond the Sea" by Bobby Daren. When asked what their advice is for getting a Valentine, they say "just put yourself out there and be better…” Lastly Greta would guess she listened to 8 hours of music in the month of February, and Roxannna would guess she’s listened to 2 hours.
Maks and Ade
This pair said that their songs are “Hear You Me” by Jimmy Eat World and “All My Loving” by The Beatles. Maks would say he listened to 20 hours of music this month, and Ade has listened to 15 hours. They met at Credo and reached out over Snapchat. Maks’ top artist this week was A$AP Rocky, and Ade’s was Lil Peep.
Ben and Inara
They responded to the question “A song comes on and you look at each other because you know it’s your song, what is it?” with “Riptide” by Vance Joy. It had a funny backstory because one of them is annoyed by it, but they still consider it their song because of the memories associated with it. Their advice on how to get a Valentine is “Actually talk to people, and learn the interests of the person you like.” The two of them met and bonded in their Mandarin 1 class. Ben says his artist of the week was Radiohead, and Inara’s album of the week was Man’s Best Friend by Sabrina Carpenter.
Kenny and Anonymous
This couple said that the songs that really conjure the memories of each other's relationship are “Cherry Pie (I Need a Freak)” and “Cemetery Girl”, both by ICP (Insane Clown Posse). They met in Spanish class when Kenny was arguing with their ex, and ‘anonymous’ butted in with a joke. This didn’t go over well, and Kenny was a little annoyed. When they met through a mutual friend a year later, they crossed paths again… this time falling deeply in love. Kenny would guess that they listened to 20 hours of music in the month of February, and their partner listened to twice that, with 40 hours of music. Kenny’s top album this week was “Quebec” by Ween and anonymous’s top song was “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift.
Next we have a single in the mix because this impromptu interview was too funny to skip!
Anonymous (single)
Their favorite songs were “Let it Go” from Frozen and “The Duck Song” by Bryant Oden. Their favorite artists this week have been Taylor Swift and Lebron James. When asked about songs they’re playing around Valentine's day, the immediate answer was “Last Resort” by Papa Roach. In the month of February, they listened to 0 hours of music, telling us that these songs were truly always a part of their lives, not only in the recent weeks.

Album Of The Week:
A Matter Of Time, Laufey (lae-vae):
Laufey, the 26 year old artist behind A Matter Of Time, describes her latest album following the success of her sophomore album Bewitched (2023) as an ‘introspection about the anguish which comes with life and love. Featuring her unique pop-jazz, bossa nova musicality, A Matter Of Time is a masterclass in lyricism and self-reflection. In a world filled with constant, often violent calls to look at everything around us (the good and the bad) Laufey is able to provide a looking glass for our innermost selves—messy, mature and unique.
About the Artist: Laufey is an Icelandic-Chinese singer and songwriter, who recently released her third studio album, A Matter Of Time. She is known for her heavily classical and jazz influenced music for the newer generation.
Who Should Listen?
If you’re looking for something relaxing, sometimes humorous, jazzy and even-paced to listen to while you finish up homework or on the chilly ride to school, this album is perfect for you!

Songs Of The Week:
Imagine - John Lennon
About The Song: John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 1971 piano ballad Imagine is a cultural call for peace among society. With recent protests igniting nationwide surrounding immigration rights, music is a powerful way to bring people together—and it’s a compelling commentary on society from music made almost 60 years ago that you can find just as politically applicable as ever in today’s day and age.
Our Rating: 9.5/10 (Suggested by: Amanda King, Onyx)
Lover Girl - Laufey
About The Song: “The hardest part of loving someone is being away from them,” is what Laufey refers to as the core story element in Lover Girl, in which she explores themes of change, particularly her stress around becoming a person (this “lover girl”) she had always made fun of, over a swingy bossa nova beat and her light, heady vocals.
Our Rating: 9/10 (Suggested by: Lola Hartley, Whitney)
Basic Being Basic - Djo
About The Song: Why are we so scared of being basic? In Basic Being Basic, Djo wonders if that makes us even more basic. His low-pitched, monotone voice is accompanied by electronic synths as he critiques minimalism, looking hot, and following trends through witty quips and one-liners. His insightful lyrics follow the thought that anything and everything can be basic.
Our Rating: 11/10 (Suggested by: anonymous)
