Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies, and it has been performed by actors for over 400 years. Now, the local Cinnabar Theater will be carrying on this legacy. Members of the theater’s young rep program, including yours truly, will be performing Macbeth at SSU starting in early March. Opening night is on the 13th, and performances continue through the 22nd. There are two different, equally talented casts that will be performing: Hautboys cast and Pretty Chickens cast. They will alternate between performances, so make sure you get the right tickets for the cast you’d like to see. Cast lists are available on the website if you’re not sure who’s in which cast.
So, what is Macbeth? Macbeth is a play written by William Shakespeare around the early 1600s, during the reign of King James I. The play is set in 11th century Scotland, and follows Macbeth, a Scottish nobleman. He gained the respect of the king in a battle against Norway, and the king decided to give him the land and title of another noble who was executed after joining Norway in the war. While returning from a battle, Macbeth encounters three witches that tell him that he will someday be king. This leads him and his wife, Lady Macbeth, to plot the murder of Duncan, the current king. Macbeth is a story about ambition, violence, and conscience that still holds up today.
Cinnabar’s interpretation of the play involves a large amount of combat and several exciting battle scenes. There are a lot of really talented actors involved, and I’m very excited to see how it turns out in the end. From what has been rehearsed so far, it’s shaping up to be a great performance and, in my slightly biased opinion, is worth attending.
